Botanic specificity
Turmeric, a spice that has long been recognized for its medicinal properties, has received interest from both the medical/scientific world and from culinary enthusiasts. It is the major source of the polyphenol curcumin. Turmeric has been in Asia for thousands of years and is a major part of Ayurveda, Siddha medicine and Traditional Chinese medicine. This medical herb is used for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic and anti-microbial properties.
Traditional use
Health-conscious consumers are increasingly interested in diets and supplements providing anti-inflammatory benefits, as more and more research points to inflammation as an underlying mechanism of many health conditions, from post-exercise soreness to chronic autoimmune diseases and joint problems. The market leader curcumin (from turmeric) has enjoyed big growth and its popularity continues as scientific evidence supports its numerous benefits
Consumer trend
As the demand increases globally, it has created pressure on supply. Unfortunately, this has led to increased instances of adulterated product in the market. With a market which is expected to reach $32 million in US in 2024, the powerful bioactive Curcumin from Turrmeric reached explosive popularity in the US, Europe and worldwide. Like most categories that reach such a heightened level of adoption, curcumin faces exploitation, adulteration and mis-use of science. Besides artificial, added color, lead chromate added to increase weight of the product, or adulteration by addition of synthetic Curcumin, Turmeric extracts and powders are subject to various attempts to deceive the consumer.
