Botanic specificity
This multipurpose medicinal plant (R. rosea), offers adaptogenic properties that improve the body’s ability to cope and recover from stress and exertion. Its many benefits are ascribed to its different constituents such as salidroside (rhodioloside), rosavins, and p-tyrosol. It has been traditionally grown and used in Russia and Mongolia, but as it’s properties have become more researched and well documented, it’s cultivation has spread throughout the world.
Traditional use
Clinical evidences confirm the natural healing properties of adaptogens such as Rhodiola rosea in helping the body resist to stress of all kinds, recover after physical exhaustion and protect skeletal muscles.
Consumer trend
As more consumers seek out supplements that can relieve stress and boost immune function, the category of Adaptogens will only grow. Adaptogens Market is expected to grow at CAGR of 8.6% to reach 4 million in 2025 from US $2,4million in 2019 (ResearchAndMarkets). In 2021, Euromonitor International consumer survey revealed that consumers rank "mental wellbeing" as their top health concern in 2021. 64% consumers declare that being healthy means for them "mental wellbeing".
BKD solutions
Our Rhodiola Rosea cultivation takes place across the border in Kazakhstan where the plants grow in a dry and cold climate with high temperature differences between day and night and high ultraviolet intensity. The frost-free period is short, leaving a small window for harvest. In total 300 000 sq km are explored and annual harvest average 300 tons of dry roots. The extraction of the plants leads to an average 100 tons per year.
Sourcing challenge
At BKD, we source our plants from Kazakhstan; at the border of China and Russia. We inspect and confirm that we are getting the right species via a full range of testing. Our Rhodiola rosea is standardized for Rosavins and Salidroside, Rosavins and salidrosides are largely responsible for Rhodiola Rosea’s antistress efficacy in both acute and chronic stress models in rodents
